About 20 million people in the United States suffer from cataracts, a condition in which the lens of the eye clouds over, rendering vision difficult if not impossible. The only available treatment is surgery. As is the case with most age-associated health conditions, a constellation of factors contribute to the development of cataracts. Prominent among the many risk factors (environmental, genetic, and lifestyle) are oxidative stress and exposure to ultraviolet radiation from sunlight. Epidemiological studies suggest that the consumption of vegetables rich in the zanthophylls, yellow colored antioxidants found in green plants, reduces the risk of developing cataracts with age.
A recent study conducted at Ohio State University (Journal of Nutrition, Dec. 2004) provides good evidence that zanthophylls found in green, leafy vegetables do indeed protect against cataracts. The researches exposed human eye lens cells to moderate ultraviolet radiation in the presence or absence of zanthophylls. Cells exposed to the radiation in the presence of zanthophylls exhibited 50-60% reduction in indicators of cell damage compared to controls. Vitamin E reduced the same indicators of cell damage by 25-32%.
There is also a growing body of evidence that dietary zanthophylls reduce the risk of another common age-associated visual disorder, macular degeneration. In macular degeneration the region of the retina of the eye responsible for central, high acuity vision (the macula) deteriorates, resulting in impaired vision. Unlike cataracts, there is currently no treatment for macular degeneration.
Adding dark green, leafy veggies to the daily diet is a simple and inexpensive way to acquire protection against the most common serious age-related diseases of the eye.

The gemach has a large selection of beautiful and tznius gowns that are new or have been donated after having been worn only once.
The gemach is growing rapidly as people are calling to donating their beautiful gowns Some of the gowns are from top designers and valued at $5,000.
